Lateral Extent of Pyroclastic Surge Deposits at Ubehebe Crater (Death Valley, California) and Implications for Hazards in Monogenetic Volcanic Fields

چکیده
Hazard assessments in monogenetic volcanic fields require estimates of the runout pyroclastic surges that result from phreatomagmatic explosive activity. Previous used distances 1–4 km, with large cases up to 6 km. Surge deposits at Ubehebe Crater (∼2100 y.b.p., Death Valley, California) have been traced ∼9 km crater center, and likely originally extended 1–3 farther. There is no evidence activity was unusually energetic; rather, its distal are better preserved than those most maar volcanoes because young age arid environment. Numerical simulations illustrate how low temperatures facilitate long due reduced expansion entrained air compared hot surges, allowing cool retain higher densities ambient air. We suggest hazard for phreatomagmatic, maar-forming eruptions should consider range 10–15

Evidence for Recent Large Magnitude Explosive Eruptions at Damavand Volcano, Iran with Implications for Volcanic Hazards
Damavand is a large dormant stratovolcano in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran located in one of the most populous provinces, which could be adversely affected by tephra fall from Damavand. The youngest known eruption is a lava flow on the western flanks with an age of 7.3 ka. The volcanic products are predominantly porphyritic trachyandesite. Three major young pumice deposits, named here a...

Damavand is a fascinating dormant stratovolcano, 60 km to the ENE of Tehran located in the Alborz Mountains. Damavand volcanic products consist of lava flows and pyroclastic fall, flow and surge deposits from different eruption cycles. The volcanic rocks ranges from trachyandesite to trachyadacite and minor basalt. The mineral assemblage consists of potash feldspar (Or43/7), Plagioclase (An25 t...

متن کاملBasaltic Pyroclastic Deposits on Earth and Mars: Constraints for Robotic Exploration of Martian Pyroclastic Deposits
Introduction: Basaltic pyroclastic rocks are uncommon on Earth because most mafic magmas are too volatile-poor to drive explosive eruptions [3-4]. However, basaltic pyroclastic deposits maybe much more common on Mars than on Earth [4-7] because Mars’ lower gravity and thinner atmosphere permit explosive eruptions from magmas with lower volatile contents. Though rare, basaltic pyroclastic rock o...
